Staying calm when things get unsettled
Bad news, uncertainty, perhaps a power cut: it is completely normal for this to weigh on you. A few simple habits help you stay composed.
Being prepared is calming
If you know there is water, food and a torch in the house, you do not have to worry about them. Preparing is not a sign of fear but of good sense. And it does not need to be perfect – every step counts.
News in moderation
- Get your information from official bodies and reputable media.
- Set fixed times for the news instead of reading every new update.
- Do not pass on rumours – check where a message comes from.
Make a plan
Talk with your family: where do you meet if you cannot reach each other? Who looks after whom? Germany's BBK recommends keeping important phone numbers on paper, too. Let children help with the plan – it gives them a sense of security.
Be there for each other
Check whether older neighbours need help. Many things are easier together, and it feels good to be useful.
Look after yourself
A steady daily routine, enough sleep, some exercise and regular meals give you something to hold on to – especially when a lot around you feels uncertain.
When it gets too much
You do not have to face it alone. In Austria and Germany the TelefonSeelsorge helpline is available around the clock, free of charge and confidential:
- Austria: 142
- Germany: 0800 111 0 111 or 0800 111 0 222
