Radiation emergencies and iodine tablets – what really helps

Hazards and what to do · Updated:

A serious accident at a nuclear power plant is very unlikely. If it does happen, one thing matters most: get indoors in time and stay there. That protects best.

How you are warned

In Austria, sirens and AT-Alert warn you; in Germany, Cell Broadcast, warning apps, radio and TV. In Austria, information comes from ORF and notfallschutz.gv.at.

Before the air is contaminated

  • Tell your neighbours – think of children, people who need help and people who speak little German.
  • Bring in pets, toys and laundry.
  • Stop collecting rainwater, cover containers.
  • Be ready to stay indoors for up to two days – usually not longer. A supply at home makes this easy.

While the air is contaminated

  • Stay indoors, as far inside as possible, away from windows. Close windows and doors, switch off ventilation and air conditioning.
  • According to the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, taping up windows and doors is not necessary.
  • If you must go out briefly: take off shoes and outer clothing before entering your home, then shower.
  • Do not harvest or eat fruit and vegetables from the garden.
  • Water from the public supply is considered safe.

Iodine tablets

Iodine tablets only protect the thyroid and only against radioactive iodine – not against other radiation.

  • Only take them when the authorities explicitly tell you to. Taken too early or too late, they protect less. According to the BfS, taking them on your own initiative can harm your health.
  • Children, young people and pregnant women are most at risk and are protected first.
  • Adults aged 40 and over (Austria) or over 45 (Germany) are advised not to take them – the side effects outweigh the benefit.
  • In Austria, potassium iodide tablets are available in pharmacies and from official distribution points. In Germany the states store the tablets and hand them out when needed, for example at town halls, fire stations or pharmacies.
  • If you have a known thyroid condition, talk to your doctor first.

Afterwards

Wipe floors and furniture with a damp cloth; do not beat carpets but vacuum or wet-clean them. Wash your hands and hair often. Refill sandpits and hose down play equipment. The authorities will say when the danger is over.

In an emergency, always follow the instructions of the authorities and emergency services.
