Water supply – how much you really need
Water is the most important part of any supply. You need it when nothing comes out of the tap or the tap water is contaminated – and it matters more than food.
The official amounts
Germany's BBK recommends 2 litres per person per day. Half a litre of that is for cooking, for example pasta, rice or potatoes. For three people, the BBK lists:
- 18 litres for 3 days
- 30 litres for 5 days
- 60 litres for 10 days
The Austrian Civil Protection Association gives an average daily need of about 2.5 litres of fluid, roughly 1.5 litres of it as drinks – the rest comes with food. Its example list has 21 litres of water and drinks for one person and 14 days.
What works well?
Sparkling mineral water keeps especially long, the Austrian association writes. Juices can replace part of it. Sugary and alcoholic drinks are not a good choice.
Storing it
- Keep it cool, dark and dry.
- Watch the best-before date and drink older water first.
- Crates of bottles stack well and are easy to rotate.
